KS2 Respect Basketball Competition - Friday 10th July

On Friday a group of Y5 children took part in the 6th annual respect Basketball competition at the EIS in Sheffield, which was run by the Sheffield Sharks. All the children involved represented our school in a superb manner and after several hours of action we eventually finished in 6th position overall out of a total of 10 teams. Please see photos below:

Y3/4 Tag Rugby Festival - Thursday 9th July

On Thursday afternoon a group of Y3/4 pupils took part in a tag rugby festival ay Yewlands School. This event was put on by coaches from the Sheffield Eagles, a professional rugby team, who had come into school for several weeks before the competition to provide some taster sessions. Once the children understood the rules fully they performed very well, finishing top of their group with wins over four local schools, with some excellent tries from Matas in particular. We lost a very close final, 2-1 to Foxhill but overall it was a fantastic afternoon for a new competition opportunity. Please find a selection of photos below:

Bikeability - Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th June

Last week a group of our Y5 and Y6 children took part in the Bikeability initiative, designed to help them become safer and more confident cyclists on the road. Please find a selection of photos below:

Please find below a selection of photos from the recent Sainsbury's School Games Tri Golf Competition, which was held at Tinsley Golf Club on Tuesday 16th June:

Sainsburys School Games Y3/4 Drax Kwik Cricket Competition - Thursday 4th June

On Thursday our Y3/4 cricket team made the trip to Hollinsend to participate in the Drax Cup qualifying round, an event we won in 2014. As with the Y5 competition some of our children had experienced inter-school cricket before, however for some of our Y3s it was a first taste. We were placed in what the organisers termed the 'group of death' with Mundella, Hunters Bar and Carfield with only the first placed team qualifying for the semi finals. Nevertheless with three victories from three we topped the group. Our games with Mundella and Carfield were fairly comfortable, however the clash with Hunters Bar was a thriller which went down to the last ball. Going in to the last two overs we were 20 runs behind, but some terrific hitting from Jacob left us three runs in front with two balls remaining. The last two balls were defended which saw Meynell victorious. In the semi-final we faced Reignhead, who had also won three games from three. This games was another fantastic games which ebbed and flowed. Meynell batted first and scored 131. Reignhead were three runs in front going into the last over. Jacob took a vital wicket to put Meynell in front. Unfortunately the last ball was hit for a six (dropped on the boundary too) which saw Reignhead go through to the final and a heartbreaking defeat for Meynell. Despite this defeat the children had a great day and represented our school wonderfully well. They won their final match against Anns Grove to finish in 3rd position overall.

Y5 Kwik Cricket Festival - Tuesday 2nd June

Last Tuesday a group of our Y5s travelled to Whitley Hall Cricket Club in Grenoside to participate in a cricket festival against five other local schools: Monteney, Mansell, Foxhill, Grenoside and St Thomas More. Heavy overnight rain threatened to spoill the day, however thankfully the weather subsided and the ground dried in time. For some of our children this built on their experiences of the Drax Cup last year, whilst for others it was a first taste of inter-school cricket. Overall we managed to win three out of our four games and were knocked out in the semi-finals by Monteney in a very close encounter.

Very well done to all children involved and please find an extensive slideshow of photos below:

Y3/4 Sainsburys School Games Mini Tennis Competition - Friday 8th May

Y3/4 Badminton Festival - Thursday 23rd April

On Thursday a group of our Y3s and Y4s went up to Yewlands school to participate in a badminton festival. They were split into small groups and moved around several sessions which tested their badminton skills. All children had been practicing hard during after school club and enjoyed the afternoon. Well done to all the children who attended and please find a selection of photos below

Y4/5 Futsal Competition - Sheffield Schools Final Tuesday 21st April

Last Tuesday our Y4/5 Futsal Team travelled to the EIS to take part in the Sheffield Schools final. They reached this stage by finishing runners up in the Yewlands cluster event in November.

We were drawn in a pool with St Catherines, Loxley, Marcliffe and Hartley Brook, winning one, drawing one and losing two. Well done to Jack, Callum, Callum, Oliver and TJ. Lease find photos below:

South Yorkshire Sainsbury's School Games Gymnastics Finals - Wednesday 18th March

Today our victorious KS2 Gymnastics team took part in the South Yorkshire Sainsbury's School Games Gymnastics Finals along with the other top ranked schools from Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley. Each child was again required to complete an individual floor routine and vault. The team performed fantastically well and finished in a well deserved third place overall, which is a superb achievement, narrowly missing out on being crowned South Yorkshire Champions. Please find a selection of photos below:

KS2 Handball Festival - Friday 6th March

On Friday a selection of children in KS2 took part in a handball festival at Yewlands between our cluster of primary schools. This was only the second handball event that had ever been organised across the city of Sheffield and therefore it was a great opportunity to play a sport new to many of our children. We had a couple of practice sessions at school in advance so the children could get an understanding of the rules and principles of this invasion game and they soon realised handball was a combination of netball and basketball.

We were drawn in a pool with Mansell, Monteney, Foxhil and Grenoside and managed to win three out of four games, with our only defeat coming in our first encounter with Mansell, who finished top of the pool by one point. We finished in second place - a great effort. Special mention to Oliver for an outstanding performance in the net in all four games!!!

Well done to all involved and please find a selection of photos below:

Sainsbury's School Games Y5/6 High 5 Netball Competition - Thursday 5th March

Last Thursday our Y5/6 Netball team travelled to Kind Edwards Secondary School to participate in the Sainsbury's School Games Y5/6 High 5 Netball Competition. We had a fantastic afternoon and the children  finally got the opportunity to put the skills they had been learning at after school club into practice. They acquitted themselves wonderfully well considering the cold conditions and challenging rules. We won our first pool game; a last second goal from Amy sealing a 2-1 success over Hatfield. We then drew our second encounter with Marcliffe 0-0, which meant our final game with Hunters Bar would determine who finished top of the pool. Hunters Bar proved to be the strongest team in the pool and despite a battling effort from our team, we were unable to take our chances and were defeated 3-0. We were still really pleased to finish in second place however, just missing out on the chance to compete for a place in the South Yorkshire finals. Our final game finished 0-0 against local rivals, Parson Cross, who also finished second overall in their respective pool. Well done to all the children involved, some of whom were taking part in an inter-school competition for the first time! Please find a selection of photos below:

KS2 Cheerleading Competition - Tuesday 10th February

On Tuesday a group of our Y6 children took part in the Sheffield final of the Sainsbury's School Games Cheerleading Competition. All the children had been practicing hard with several sessions with a coach in advance, choreographing a two and a half minute routine to music. We finished in 6th place overall our of eight teams who entered, a fantastic achievement considering it was the first time we had run a cheerleading team and we managed to put our routine together in just six weeks. The children also performed the routine to the rest of school in our merit assembly on Friday. Please see a selection of photos from the competition below:

Cricket Kidz - Tuesday 3rd and Thursday 5th February

Last week our Y3 and Y4 children got the opportunity to take part in a new initiative, Cricket Kidz. We secured this through our association with Points Learning Network. Cricket Kidz focuses on the foundation principles of striking and fielding games, specifically stop, catch, throw and strike, giving children the opportunity to develop gross motor skills by using a variety of innovative machines.

Sainsbury's School Games KS2 Gymnastics Competition - Tuesday 27th January -

SHEFFIELD CHAMPIONS!!!!!

This afternoon, a team of four children in years five and six took part in the Sheffield final of the Sainsbury's School Games KS2 Gymnastics competition at Hillsborough Leisure Centre. Each child had to complete a vault (with either straight or tuck jump) and an individual floor routine that consisted of: forward roll, arabesque, half turn, backward roll, shoulder stand, quarter turn and cartwheel.

Our children took the competition by storm, finishing in a MAGNIFICENT 1ST PLACE out of a total of nineteen schools who entered!!!! A special mention for Richelle, who had the highest individual scores on both the floor routine (a perfect 30/30) and vault (28.5/30). A really really big well done to Keira, Shelby and Alyshia also, who all represented the school in a fantastic manner. All members of the team prepared thoroughly with four lessons with a qualified gymnastics coach in advance of the competition.

We now progress on to the Sainsbury's School Games South Yorkshire Finals in March at the EIS in Sheffield, where we will compete against the top performing schools in Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham. Please find a selection of photos below:

Half Time Cup - Friday 19th December

On the last Friday of term a selection of our Y5 children were invited to the EIS in Sheffield to take part in the B Braun B Healthy Half Time Cup during the interval of a Sheffield Sharks (professional basketball team) game. Our children watched the game then took part in a couple of short matches against another school, cheered on by parents and also the crowd in attendance on the evening. All children were fantastic ambassadors for our school and got so much out of the evening. Well done to Loghan, Casey, TJ, Callum, Oliver, Aissata, Khyla, Shelby and Xavier. Please find a selection of photos below and we look forward to continuing our relationship with the Sharks next term:

Y3 Basketball Competition - Wednesday 10th December

Thanks to our links with the Sheffield Sharks professional basketball team a group of our Y3 children participated in the B Braun Kids Cup earlier today at the English Institute of Sport (EIS) in Sheffield. Several of the Sharks players had been into school to do work with our children and provide them with a taster of basketball and this culminated in the competition.

Our children were again a credit to the school and performed fantastically well. We won four of our five group games and qualified through to the play-offs which would decide the overall winner. Our semi-final game was scoreless at full time and also after sudden death, and we unfortunately suffered an agonising golden basket defeat. The children picked themselves up really well, however, to win their next match and finish in third place overall. This was a brilliant achievement from all ten Y3s who participated.

A massive well done to all the children involved, many of whom were taking part in their first ever inter-school competition, and please find a selection of photos below

Y4/5 Futsal Competition - Tuesday 25th November

After two weeks of taster sessions with coaches from Sheffield United Community Foundation we entered two teams in a futsal competition at Yewlands School yesterday. All children enjoyed the opportunity to showcase their skills and relished the format of futsal. Our Y4 team gained some valuable experience against bigger, older and stronger children from the other schools in attendance - Mansell and St Thomas More. Our Y5s excelled in winning both of their group games to qualify for the final, where they suffered an agonising late 2-1 defeat, but we still managed to qualify through to the regional final after Christmas. Well done to all involved and please find a selection of photos below:

Y5/6 Sainsburys School Games Sportshall Athletics Competition - Friday 21st November

On Friday afternoon a group of our Y5 and Y6 children participated in the Yewlands cluster qualification round for the Sainsburys School Games Sportshall Athletics Competition.

We competed against four other primary schools in a selection of track and field events, including 1 lap sprint, hurdles, obstacle relay, speed bounce, long jump and target throw so each child got the opportunity to take part in at least three events.

After some fantastic performances we finished third overall and therefore just missed out on qualification for the Sheffield area finals. Highlights included Tia winning the 1-lap sprint and Shelby and Phoebe winning the target throw competition.

Please see a selection of photos below:

KS1 Fundamentals Competition - Friday 14th November

On Friday afternoon a group of eighteen Y2 children got the opportunity to take part in their first ever school sport competition. This was a fundamentals event at Yewlands School, where the children were split into two groups and worked their way around a variety of stations which tested their physical literacy. Challenges included throwing and catching, dribbling a ball, aiming at a target, kicking a ball and developing spatial awareness. Behaviour and attitude to learning was fanatstic and all children enjoyed the event.

Please see below for a selection of photos:

After School Clubs - Half Term Two

This half term sees a change in the after school club timetable, with new clubs being offered to our children. Change4Life continues on a Monday, with Y5/6 Badminton on Tuesdays, Y3/4 Basketball on Wednesdays and Y5/6 Netball on Thursdays. The three new clubs feed into competitions later in the school year through the Sainsbury's School Games initiative. For further information please click on the 'Breakfast/After School' tab or speak to Mr Ward.

Y5/6 School Football - Cup Matches

The penultimate day of our first half term, Thursday 23rd October, saw us welcome three schools - Monteney, Greystones and St Maries - to Meynell in the cup competition. The weather was kinder than in recent weeks and this made for an enjoyable afternoon of football with all matches being ten minutes one way.

In our first match we were defeated 2-0 by Monteney, who simply took the chances that came their way, something we were unable to do despite playing well!

In game two we suffered a nail-biting and ultimately disappointing 1-0 defeat to Greystones, despite another promising performance.

Game three saw us get our just deserts for excellent effort and endeavour in the previous games as we defeated St Maries 2-1, with Bradley and Shane scoring the decisive goals which capped a great performance enjoyed by all parents and carers who turned out to support.

Greystones topped the table and progress to the next round, with Meynell finishing a creditable third place overall!

Unfortunately, our league games against both Hartley Brook and Hatfield had to be postponed due to bad weather and these will hopefully be replayed during half term two.

Y5/6 School Football Team

Our Y5/6 Football Team played their first league matches on Friday, drawing 1-1 against Parson Cross and 0-0 against Monteney. We have more matches scheduled this week, against Hartley Brook on Thursday and Hatfield on Friday. On Thursday 23rd October we then host Monteney, Greystones and St Maries in the cup.

Sainsburys School Games Sportsmark Award

We are pleased to announce that Meynell has been awarded the prestigious Sainsburys School Games Bronze Sportsmark Award. This is in recognition of our work to develop competition across the school in 2013-14. Well done to all the children who have engaged with PE and school sport and continue to do so!

Y3/4 Drax Kwik Cricket South Yorkshire Sainsburys School Games Finals - Tuesday 1st July

On Tuesday our victorious Y3/4 kwik cricket team travelled to Doncaster for the Level Three South Yorkshire Finals, where we competed against the best two teams from each of Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley. After the opening ceremony at the Keepmoat Stadium, we went to Doncaster Town cricket club for our matches. The children aquitted themselves wonderfully well and although we did not manage to win a game, we lost two very close matches and also to the eventual champions, Shawlands Primary from Barnsley. Our children gained so much from the experience and will be better next year as we continue to work on overarm bowling!!

Please find a selection of photos below and well done to the children involved

Y3/4 Drax Kwik Cricket Sainsburys School Games Final - Wednesday 25th June

Last Wednesday our Y3/4 cricket team travelled to Hollinsend Cricket Club to participate in the Sheffield area finals of the Sainsburys School Games Drax Kwik Cricket (Level 2)Competition. The weather was fantastic and so were our children as they won all four of their matches to qualify for the South Yorkshire finals!!! This is a magnificent achievement considering none of the children had ever played cricket before or took part in a competition. We won our first two group games, against Anns Grove and Mansell, fairly comfortably and then upset favourites Mundella, winning by one run on the last ball. This meant we played Brookhouse in the final. Meynell batted first and scored 134 with some big hitting by Callum and Callum and excellent running by Jacob and Loghan. We then managed to restrict Brookhouse to 119 after superb bowling and fielding by everyone, including fine catching, which we had been working hard on in the run up to the event. Our win means we have a quick turnaround with the South Yorkshire Finals taking place in Doncaster on Tuesday 1st July.

Well done to all the team and please find a selection of photos below.

Tour De France Assembly and Virtual Veledrome

On Thursday 12th June our local Sustrans Bike It Officer came into school to talk to the children about the Tour De France. In assembly he spoke about where the Tour was passing through Sheffield this year and what all the different coloured jerseys represented. After assembly he set up a virtual veledrome in the hall and children in years five and six were challenged to complete the fastest lap. Well done to Bradley who recorded the fastest time and received the yellow jersey. Where will you be watching the Grand Depart on Sunday 6th July??

Y3/4 SAINSBURYS SCHOOL GAMES TENNIS COMPETITION - FRIDAY 9TH MAY

Last week eight children in Y3/4 participated in the Level 2 Sheffield Sainsburys School Games Primary School Mini Tennis Competition, which was held at Hallamshire Tennis Club. The children were split into two teams and each team played three matches against other schools in Sheffield. Those selected had been attending practices regularly on Tuesdays after-school and were determined to showcase their forehand, backhand and serving skills in a competitive environment. Both Meynell's teams performed fantastically, with one coming in third place and the other narrowly missing out on reaching the Sheffield Final after a close defeat to Nethergreen. They all had a fantastic afternoon, were superb role models for our school and learned so much about Tennis. Keep up the good work. Please find a photo below of all participants.

Points Learning Network Games - Tuesday 29th April

A group of our Y3 children went to the EIS in Sheffield to take part in the inaugural Points Learning Network Games on Tuesday 29th April. This event was provided by our sports partnership and entailed a number of athletics and multi-skills activities, where we competed in teams against each other and other schools in Sheffield. This was the first taste of an inter-school competition for many of our children and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Well done!

Please find some photos below

Y5 BIKEABILITY

Y3/4 BADMINTON FESTIVAL TUESDAY 8TH APRIL

A group of our Y3/4 children were invited up to Yewlands Secondary School on Tuesday 8th April for a Badminton festival for the primary cluster schools. We have been training for the event on a Friday after-school and got the opportunity to put all our hard-work into practice as we competed in teams against other schools, working our way around several badminton and multi-skills based activities that tested our agility, balance and coordination! All the children put in a great amount of effort and were very tired by the end of the afternoon, well done!

Please see photos below!
