DT should provide children with a real life context for learning. At Meynell, we want to allow children to aspire to be more and to contribute to their community through creating opportunities for them in the wider world. Through the DT curriculum, children should be inspired by engineers, designers, chefs and architects to enable them to create a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products with a real life purpose. We encourage children to consider bigger picture concepts through this such as conservation and health. We also use DT as a driver to challenge stereotypes and to encourage children to think about equality and fairness.
As part of our Design and Technology Y4 children learnt about the history of kites, the different designs and materials and equipment used in building them. They then planned, designed and built their own kites. The children then took their kites out on to the field and tested them.
