What is the Children's Leadership Team?
A Children's Leadership Team provides a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions and have their views considered in decisions that impact upon them.
Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) says that the opinions of children and young people should be considered when people make decisions about things that involve them. Their opinions shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand on the grounds of age. They should be taken seriously, with their evolving capacities taken into account.
Children and young people don’t have as much power as adults. They can’t vote, and they don’t have as much money. But Article 12 says they still have the human right to have opinions and for these opinions to be heard and taken seriously.
Article 12 also says children and young people should be given the information they need to make good decisions. One of the things the UNCRC does is to make it clear that human rights apply to children and young people as much they do to adults.
At Meynell Primary School, our Children's Leadership Team is a group of children that represents the views of all our pupils. It gives our children the opportunity to have their voices heard and be part of the whole school community. They help to makes decisions about school life and organise projects that support learning and development, such as organising charity events, theme days or representing the school at outside events.
We value the opinions of our pupils and our school council gives pupils a forum to share these opinions with our school council teacher representative, Headteacher and other members of staff.
Who are the Children's Leadership Team representatives?
A new Children's Leadership Team is elected each year and is made up of two representatives from each class (from FS2 to Year 6). At Meynell, all children are allowed to vote in democratic elections at the beginning of the year. A Children's Leadership Team representative and deputy representative are chosen by their peers. Mr Hope - Children's Leadership Team (Teacher representative)
I am very proud to lead our Children's Leadership Team. We have amazing children in our school who have lots of great ideas on how we can work together to make a better school. When we meet, we explore new ideas together. We aim to raise aspirations for all children in school. We have children from Year 6 all the way down to FS2. We want to make sure that all children’s voices are heard in our school. I am very proud to work with a great group of children this year and I know we are going to achieve a lot for our school!
Children's Leadership Team aims:
- To meet regularly to discuss their views and be heard.
- To make sure our school is a happy and safe place for all of our children
- To make sure children have a place to voice their concerns, opinions, and thoughts
- To encourage all children in school to suggest ideas and improvements
- To ensure any suggestions or concerns are listened to and acted upon.
- To organise whole school and class events

Mr Hope gave a brief introduction to the school council and emphasised how the school council representatives are considered to be role models who represent the academy. They should be able to follow rules, display good behaviour and help towards keeping the children safe. They should also view their position as a privileged role as they have been voted in by their class mates. It was agreed by all in attendance that they could fulfil their roles this year. New School Council badges were discussed and the importance of taking care of them was emphasised. |

Today, the school council met to talk about anti-bullying. We discussed all the things that school was doing well and we thought about ways to make things even better! We passed our ideas and thoughts onto our Senior Behaviour Coordinator, Mrs Holliday. Thank you to all the councillors who attended today.

The school council met to create a shared vision for the playground. We talked about how we would like to see the British Values at playtimes. Then we created a playground vision in pairs. Our results are amazing - have a look for yourself below:

Today, the 'School Leadership Team' met to talk about healthy lunchboxes. This half term, children have been learning how to keep themselves healthy: our councillors have used that knowledge to make healthy choices as part of a 'model' lunchbox. The children will talk to their classes about putting healthy foods in packed lunches as well as a treat every now and again!
