SMSC at Meynell Primary School

At Meynell Primary School we recognise that the personal development of pupils, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve.

We aim to:

• provide a balanced, engaging and broad education that gives our children opportunities to explore and develop their own, values and beliefs, spiritual awareness.
• encourage a positive and caring attitude towards other people; an understanding of British Values and its social and cultural traditions as well as an appreciation of the diversity and richness of other cultures. 

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development is promoted, not only through all the subjects of the curriculum, but also through the ethos of the school and our shared values.

British Values at Meynell Primary 

At Meynell we use the Dot Com Children’s Foundation scheme of work (http://dotcomcf.org). Dot Com is a recommended PSHSE resource supported by the Home Office. It is a safeguarding tool’ to raise awareness and keep pupils safe from the dangers of abuse, sexual exploitation, radicalisation and extremism. It promotes children’s rights and fundamental British values.

Lessons are designed to be age appropriate and embed the key themes of:

• Personal safety
• Respect for yourself and others,
• Children’s rights and responsibilities,
• Good decision making and the importance of communication

Throughout the Dot Com programme, children are taught three core messages:

1. We all have the right to feel safe all the time
2. Others have the right to feel safe with me
3. we can talk with someone about anything, even if it feels awful or small.

The Dot Com programme:

• encourages pupils to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence;
• promotes pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development;

• pupils will be encouraged to accept responsibility for their own behaviours, show initiative and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and wider society;
• pupils will gain an understanding of the importance of respecting their own and others’ cultures;
• pupils will gain an understanding of how citizens can influence decision–making through the democratic process;
• enables pupils to distinguish right from wrong;

• provides pupils with an appreciation that living under the rule of law protects individual citizens and is essential for our well-being and safety.
